A good first skate should fit securely, wheel hardness to match the surface where you plan to skate with real trucks to give you a stable platform for learning basic skills.

Start With the Right Fit

A beginner skate should hold your heel securely without painfully squeezing your toes. You want your toes close, almost touching the front but not squished. Where Will You Skate?

For sidewalks, paths and rough pavement, softer outdoor wheels can provide a smoother ride. For rink skating, firmer indoor wheels may be more appropriate. Wheel hardness is referred to as the durometer. Outdoor wheels typically start at a 78 durometer, meaning they are softer. The higher the durometer number, the harder the wheels. Recreational Skates Are a Good Starting Point

Many new skaters are well served by recreational roller skates. We like to stick to established brands and recommend staying away from any fast fashion brands as they can be not only unsafe but make learning to skate more difficult . Most people start with a recreational roller skates but If you already know you want to pursue rhythm, derby or park skating, choosing a discipline-specific setup may make more sense. Protective Gear for New Skaters

Consider a helmet, wrist guards, knee pads and elbow pads while learning. Browse roller skate safety gear.  All safety gear is important to help prevent injury and make you feel more confident skating. If you choose not to wear safety gear we will at least try and talk you into wrist guards as wrist are the most common injury we see with recreational skaters. Roller Derby and Park skaters should wear full gear including helmet.
